The Minnesota state Capitol has once again been “blessed” with FFRF’s Winter Solstice display.
FFRF member Conni Conner set up the state/church watchdog’s Bill of Rights exhibit in the East Hall on the ground floor of the Capitol building. This is the third year in a row FFRF has been at the seat of lawmaking in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
A sign attached to the tongue-in-cheek display, featuring three Founders and Lady Liberty gazing at a “baby” Bill of Rights in a manger, reads:
At this season of the Winter Solstice
Join us in honoring the Bill of Rights, adopted on December 15, 1791, which reminds us there can be no religious freedom without the freedom to dissent.
Keep religion and government separate!
At the bottom, it proclaims: “Joy to the World — the Bill of Rights is born!”
“It’s important during this season to represent the views of the growing population of Americans who are not religious, since this season belongs to everyone,” says FFRF Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor. “’Tis the season to remind Americans of the secular roots of our Constitution, which protects true religious freedom by keeping religion out of government.”
Almost a third, 29 percent, of Minnesota residents are “atheist, agnostic or nothing in particular,” the same percentage as the national average.
FFRF thanks Conner for her continued dedication toward setting up the solstice banner — ensuring there’s space in Minnesota for the secular viewpoint.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is the largest national association of freethinkers (atheists and agnostics) with almost 42,000 members and several chapters all over the country, including more than 800 members and two chapters in Minnesota. The organization works to protect the constitutional separation between religion and government.
